Policemen from Germany, Denmark, Finland and Sweden on Thursday accompanied Chinese policemen to investigate a Chinese ship that was reportedly located near two damaged communication cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea last month.
According to the German police, the aim was to “jointly investigate the equipment and documentation of the ship in question, as well as to jointly interrogate the crew for information”.
The Swedish police announced earlier that Chinese officials had invited them, as well as a Swedish Accident Commission, to be on board as observers during their planned investigation of the ship “Yi Ping 3”.
The police stated that the Swedish side will not take any actions on its own on the ship.
It is noteworthy that the communication cables, which run between the Finnish capital Helsinki and the German port of Rostock, and between Sweden and Lithuania, were suddenly cut one by one a month ago.
Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson said last month that his country had officially asked China to cooperate in explaining the recent damage to two data cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in an area where the Chinese ship was spotted.
