Hong Kong Legal Experts Voice Alarm as “National Security” Trials Target Future Generations

Hong Kong — January 6, 2026

As the 19th Asian Financial Forum kicks off in Hong Kong today, a shadow of legal uncertainty continues to loom over the city’s judicial system.

Legal experts and international human rights monitors have voiced fresh concerns this hour regarding the ongoing sentencing and trials of pro-democracy figures under the 2020 National Security Law.

With the “Hong Kong 47” case now serving as a permanent legal precedent, the focus has shifted to “preventive justice” and the criminalization of democratic behaviors that were once the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s “One Country, Two Systems” model.

Headline Points:

• Diminished Autonomy: Legal scholars argue that the “rule of law” in Hong Kong has been reconfigured for “national security” over individual rights.

 • Interpol 2026 Summit: Hong Kong prepares to host the global policing summit amid accusations of using “red notices” against political exiles.

 • Youth Outreach Concerns: The Hong Kong Police Force announces new programs to ensure national identity is “deep-rooted” in students’ hearts.

 • Judicial Appeals: Eight of the “Hong Kong 47” defendants plan to appeal their sentences, testing the remaining independence of the High Court.

While the Hong Kong government promotes the city as a “vibrant financial hub,” the reality for political opposition is starkly different.

The recent conviction of media tycoon Jimmy Lai and the lengthy sentences handed to 45 pro-democracy activists have effectively silenced the city’s political “Self.” Police Commissioner Chow Yat-ming confirmed this hour that “safeguarding national security remains the top priority,” even as the city hosts international business leaders to showcase the “success” of its current governance model.

CJ Global Castle Journal will continue to monitor the upcoming appeals as a barometer for the future of global governance in Asia.
