Iran Names Interim Leadership: Alireza Arafi Appointed After Khamenei Killing

Tehran, Iran – March 1, 2026

In a swift and decisive move to prevent a total collapse of state authority, the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially triggered Article 111 of its constitution.

Following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a devastating joint U.S.-Israeli air strike on Saturday, the Expediency Discernment Council has announced the formation of a three-member interim leadership council to steer the nation through its most perilous hour.

The Rise of Alireza Arafi

At the heart of this transition is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a prominent 67-year-old cleric and member of the Guardian Council, who has been appointed as the “jurist member” of the temporary leadership body.

Arafi, who was handpicked by the late Khamenei for the Guardian Council in 2019, is widely seen as a staunch hardliner with deep roots in Iran’s ideological and paramilitary structures.

As the former head of the Basij paramilitary force and chairman of Al-Mustafa International University, his appointment is intended to signal continuity and strength to both the domestic population and the IRGC.

The interim council is composed of a strategic “trio” designed to maintain balance across the branches of government:

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi:

Representing the religious and constitutional jurists.

Masoud Pezeshkian:

The sitting Iranian President, managing the executive branch.

Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei:

The Judiciary Chief, ensuring legal and internal security control.

A Nation in Mourning and Mobilization

Iranian state media, including IRNA and Tasnim, confirmed that a 40-day period of mourning has been declared for the late Supreme Leader, who ruled the country for nearly four decades.

However, the atmosphere in Tehran is far from somber; it is one of high-alert mobilization.
President Pezeshkian has characterized the assassination as a “declaration of war against all Muslims,” while the newly appointed head of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, vowed to strike back with “a force never before seen in human history.”

The Mechanics of Succession

According to Expediency Council spokesman Seyed Mohsen Dehnavi, this interim council will fulfill all duties of the Supreme Leader until the Assembly of Experts can convene to elect a permanent successor.

While Arafi is now a central figure, names like Mojtaba Khamenei (the late leader’s son) and Mohammad Mirbagheri remain under intense speculation by international intelligence agencies as potential long-term heirs to the theocratic throne.

Strategic Implications for the Region

The appointment comes as the “Nightmare Scenario” for the Middle East unfolds. For the first time, Iran has moved beyond its proxy strategy, launching direct retaliatory strikes from its own soil against Israeli cities and U.S. assets across the Gulf.

With the interim leadership now in place, the world watches to see if this council will opt for further escalation or if the loss of the “spiritual linchpin” will force a tactical retreat. For now, the message from Tehran is clear: the leadership may have changed, but the defiance remains.
