Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir to Make Second U.S. Visit in Two Months

Date:

Washington- US | August 8, 2025

In a move that highlights a significant and rapid re-engagement between Washington and Islamabad, Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is set to make a second visit to the United States this week. The trip, just two months after his last, underscores a strategic shift in U.S. foreign policy toward South Asia under the Trump administration.

According to official sources in Islamabad, the primary purpose of the visit is for Munir to attend the farewell ceremony for the outgoing commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), General Michael E. Kurilla, in Tampa, Florida. The timing is notable, as General Kurilla recently visited Pakistan and was awarded one of the country’s highest honors, a sign of deepening military-to-military ties.

This visit follows Munir’s previous trip in June, where he had an unprecedented private lunch with President Donald Trump at the White House. That meeting was seen as a major diplomatic gesture, and during it, Trump publicly credited Munir with helping to de-escalate tensions with India following a terror attack in Kashmir.

The renewed military engagement is taking place against a backdrop of domestic and international complexities. While the U.S. is signaling its renewed partnership with Pakistan, Munir’s visits have been met with protests from the Pakistani diaspora, who accuse the military of meddling in domestic politics. However, Washington appears keen to solidify its relationship with Pakistan’s military, which it views as a critical partner in counterterrorism and a key player in a region with growing Chinese influence.
