The US envoy to Lebanon, Amos Hochstein, confirmed on Monday evening that the Israeli army will completely withdraw from Lebanon.
“The Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon will continue and the Israeli army will completely withdraw from Lebanon, “Hochstein said after meeting the speaker of the Lebanese parliament.
“The implementation of the agreement in southern Lebanon is not easy,” he added, explaining that “the Lebanese army will be deployed in southern Lebanon according to the agreement”.
He also stressed that reaching a political consensus in Lebanon is “extremely important”.
The deployment of the Lebanese army
The talk of the US envoy to Lebanon comes at a time when the Lebanese army units, on Monday, began deploying in the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon” UNIFIL”.
A statement issued by the Lebanese army command said: “army units were stationed around the town of Naqoura – tyre and began deploying there in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon – UNIFIL, and in conjunction with the meeting of the five-way Committee to oversee the ceasefire agreement in Ras Naqoura in the presence of senior adviser to US President Joe Biden, Amos Hochstein, in parallel with the withdrawal of the Israeli enemy from the town.
“The deployment will be completed during the next phase, and the competent units will conduct an engineering survey of the town with a view to removing unexploded ordnance,”the statement added.
The Army Command called on “citizens not to approach the area and adhere to the instructions of the military units until the end of the deployment”.
On November 26, US President Joe Biden announced a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. The implementation of the ceasefire began at dawn on November 27 last, after efforts by the American envoy Hochstein.
