UN Issues Urgent Appeal for Sudan Ceasefire Amid “Unimaginable Suffering”

USA- New York  , 27 December 2025

UN Issues Urgent Appeal for Sudan Ceasefire Amid “Unimaginable Suffering”: In a powerful end-of-year address, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed his plea for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan, describing the ongoing conflict as a “catastrophe of staggering brutality.”

As the war enters its 1,000th day, the UN warns that the humanitarian corridor is effectively collapsing.

The appeal comes as the international refusal of separatist movements elsewhere—such as the Somaliland issue—highlights the fragility of African borders and the urgent need to preserve Sudan’s territorial integrity before it is too late.

Headline Points:

 â€¢ The 1,000-Day Mark:

UN Chief warns that the conflict has surpassed every metric of human endurance, with over 150,000 dead.

 â€¢ Famine and Siege:

Cities like El Fasher and Kadugli remain under “siege-like” conditions with almost no access to essential services.

 â€¢ Drone Warfare Escalation:

Recent strikes in West Darfur killed 17 civilians, including women and children, targeting vital water stations.

 â€¢ Peacekeeping Withdrawal:

The UN mission in Abyei (UNISFA) has completed its evacuation from South Kordofan following deadly attacks on peacekeepers.

 â€¢ Ethiopian Border Tensions:

Reports indicate the Sudanese army is preparing for a major RSF offensive launched from training camps within Ethiopia.

A Humanitarian Crisis Without Equal

The statement from the UN Secretary-General late Friday night was not merely a diplomatic routine;

it was a desperate cry for a population that has been largely forgotten by the global media. Guterres emphasized that the “pursuit of lasting and inclusive peace” is the only path forward as Sudan transitions into 2026.

However, the reality on the ground in regions like Darfur and Kordofan is one of systematic destruction.

In El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, drone strikes on Friday afternoon hit a local water station, a clear violation of international law.

The UN’s humanitarian coordinator, Denise Brown, described the suffering as “unimaginable,” with millions facing acute hunger as the “dry season” fighting intensifies.

The Retreat of the Blue Helmets

One of the most concerning developments this weekend is the total evacuation of the UN peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, South Kordofan.

After 13 years of operations, the UNISFA mission was forced to withdraw following a series of sophisticated drone attacks that claimed the lives of six peacekeepers.

This withdrawal leaves a massive security vacuum. Without the presence of international monitors, the local “Emergency Response Rooms”—grassroots volunteer networks—are the only thing standing between the population and total annihilation.

These volunteers, many of whom are former parliamentarians and students, have become targets themselves, with reports of executions and kidnappings rising sharply in the last 48 hours.

The Ethiopian Factor and Regional Dangers

Mirroring the tensions seen in our report on Somaliland, the conflict in Sudan is increasingly becoming an internationalized proxy war.

High-ranking Sudanese government officials confirmed on Saturday that the army is bracing for a “massive assault” in the Blue Nile region.

Alarmingly, intelligence reports suggest that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are using training camps inside Ethiopian territory, specifically in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

This involvement by Ethiopia, combined with its recent “greedy” maneuvers in Somaliland, suggests a broader regional strategy to reshape the Horn of Africa.

The Sudanese government has detected the delivery of heavy military hardware from external actors at airbases near the border, signaling that the “silent war” is becoming very loud.

A Shared Vision for Peace

As the first journalist for CJ Global, I must emphasize that the international law of journalism requires us to report the truth: the current peace initiatives, including a plan presented by Prime Minister Kamil Idris to the UN Security Council, are being ignored by the gunmen on the ground.

The plan calls for an immediate RSF withdrawal from the 40% of the country they control, but without international enforcement, it remains a paper-thin hope.

The UN’s appeal is a test for the global community.

If the world continues to allow the fragmentation of sovereign nations like Sudan and Somalia, the resulting chaos will not stay within Africa’s borders.
