Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, announcing that her country will give almost $100 million in humanitarian aid and governance support for Palestinians just days before a highly anticipated election. The funding is for major agencies working in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The funding also is including $30 million for recovery and governance support in the West Bank, where violence has intensified between Israeli forces and local militants amid “significant displacement.”
After the new events in Gaza strip this week where Israel violated the ceasefire agreement and did number of air strikes killed hundreds of people and destroyed tens of houses,
Ottawa announced that it will also donate with almost $45 million for healthcare, food, and shelter for Palestinians, especially in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that he ordered the attacks because negotiations to extend the ceasefire had stalled. Officials have warned that the extensive operation is indefinite and may escalate.
Hamas reacted to the airstrikes by accusing them of violating the ceasefire and endangering the lives of the remaining Israeli hostages. This surprising escalation occurred during a period of relative peace, coinciding with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
